Looking in the wrong place – 2014

Instead of going to St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta to experience first hand the seminal painting The beheading of St John the baptist, I went for a walk in the Maltese hills looking for Caravaggio within the landscape.

Caravaggio fled to Malta in 1606 looking for sanctity under the Knights of Malta after committing murder. Though after another brawl in which a knight was seriously wounded the painter was imprisoned shortly before the unveiling of his masterpiece. Under the cover of darkness he escaped the cave-like cell within the fort he was held captive and fled to Sicily.
